Bulldog Ant Care: What to Know About Myrmecia

Bulldog ants, also called bull ants, are large Australian ants with excellent vision, powerful mandibles and a painful sting. They are a showpiece for experienced ant keepers.

What bulldog ants are

Myrmecia is a genus of mostly Australian ants, including very large species. The species we cover is Myrmecia nigriceps, the black-headed bull ant. Workers are about 19 to 23 mm long, with a black gaster, a red to yellowish-red thorax and very large eyes. They are visual hunters that forage at twilight and at night.

The sting

Bull ants have a powerful, painful sting that can be used repeatedly, and they are described as extremely aggressive when disturbed. One ant-keeping source warns that the sting can cause a severe allergic reaction in susceptible people. Anyone with an allergy to insect stings, and households with small children or pets, should not keep this species. Never handle the ants.

Setup

  • An earth-type nest, underground in style. In nature the nest is a mound decorated with pebbles and plant material.
  • A secure lid. One ant-keeping source rates the escape risk as high because of the ants’ size and strength.
  • A calm place: workers react to movement they can see.

Feeding

Adults take nectar and other sweet liquids. The larvae are carnivorous, so live insects are the usual protein. See feeding ant colonies.

Climate and winter rest

Care information for this species is limited. One ant-keeping source recommends a winter rest of two to three months and advises avoiding temperatures above 30 °C. Because only one source gives guidance, we do not publish temperature or humidity figures.

Colony size

Colonies are small, a few hundred workers, which keeps the setup manageable.

Who it suits

Only experienced ant keepers who understand the risks. It is the kind of ant you keep after you have mastered containment with other species. See advanced ant keeping.

Myrmecia nigriceps is native Australian wildlife. Rules on keeping and moving native Australian wildlife differ between countries, so please ask ANTELYX what applies to your destination before you order.
