Messor barbarus is a seed-harvesting ant with one queen, impressive trunk trails and colonies of around ten thousand workers. The species page has the full profile: Messor barbarus.

Starting out

The queen founds the colony alone and does not need to eat until her first workers appear. A ant-keeping source reports that the first workers emerge after roughly 8 to 18 weeks, depending on temperature. The same source suggests a foraging area once the colony reaches about 20 to 50 workers and a dedicated nest at about 50 to 100 workers.

Nest

Use a nest with a moist brood area and a dry seed store. Messor barbarus is described as a deep-nesting species, with a suggestion of 20 to 30 cm of depth in one source. Ytong, plaster or acrylic nests work. See ant nest setup.

Feeding

Seeds are the staple. Offer a mixture of small seeds, and add small insects and a sugar source. Remove husks and keep the seed store dry. See feeding ant colonies.

Climate

  • Nest temperature about 22–25 °C.
  • Brood area about 50–60 percent humidity, seed store dry.
  • A winter rest of a few months at about 10–15 °C is recommended by most ant-keeping sources; one source calls it beneficial but not mandatory for young colonies. See ant hibernation and winter rest.

What to expect

The colony grows at a moderate pace to around 10,000 workers on average. Workers vary from small minors to large majors, and each size class has its own role in harvesting. The workers follow permanent trails that can reach about 30 metres in nature.

Compare with Messor structor

Messor structor often has several queens and slightly different needs. See Messor structor vs Messor barbarus and the wider harvester ant care guide.
