Ants are tougher than they look, but a colony in transit is still a living animal. Careful timing, good packaging and someone ready to receive it make the difference.
Why shipping live ants takes care
- Temperature. Extreme heat or cold in a parcel can harm a colony. Weather on the route matters as much as weather at both ends.
- Time in transit. The shorter, the better. Delays are the biggest risk, which is why dispatch days are chosen carefully.
- Handling. Containers need to stay upright, secure and ventilated.
- Rules. Which species can be moved between which countries depends on regulations, so we check before we ship.
How we plan a shipment
We confirm the species, your destination and the dispatch day with you before anything leaves. If the weather or the route makes a shipment unwise, we may suggest a different day. If a shipment cannot legally or operationally be made, we tell you and agree on what to do. See the shipping information and the live arrival policy for the details.
Packaging
Colonies are packed in secure containers with the protection that the species and the season call for, so that the ants stay safe and cannot escape. Exact materials and methods can vary by species, destination and season.
Be ready to receive
- Make sure someone can accept the parcel on the delivery day.
- Prepare the nest and outworld before it arrives. See ant nest setup.
- Keep the parcel indoors and out of direct sun or cold.
When the parcel arrives
- Open the package calmly and check the container.
- Let the ants settle, and do not shake them or expose them to bright light.
- Photograph any problem, such as a damaged container, before you move anything.
- Contact us promptly if something is wrong, as set out in the live arrival policy.
After arrival
Keep the colony quiet and at the right temperature for a few days, then start feeding as appropriate for the species. See how to start an ant colony and feeding ant colonies.
